Seeing eye to eye with ...
Saturday was another day of marveling at nature ... and manufactured items.
The Mister read about the Rossfeld scenic road ... "passable all year round" ... Germany's highest scenic road. It's a toll road and very well maintained. There were lots of hairpin turns but it always was a two-lane road so that kept my "eek!"s to a minimum.
There were lots of places to pull off and park and just enjoy the scenery.
Pretty soon we were eye to eye with clouds and mountain tops. At times it reminded me of being on an airplane. But nobody was kicking the back of my seat.
When I get home, I will show you the other 318 photos I took!
At the Summit, there was a small stand, operated by one lady, where you could enjoy beer, wine, etc. Since we could see our breath a little bit, we ordered hot chocolate, fully expecting a water-based beverage in a styrofoam cup. But we got real hot chocolate (below) with real whipped cream served with real dishes. Ahhh, the little things ... while you're trying to grasp the view of the bigger things.
What a thrill to be in the area (below) that the closing scenes of The Sound of Music movie were filmed ... when the family is climbing their way out of Austria to Switzerland. (Which is absurd. In real life, the Von Trapps did escape but took a train to Italy.)
But the day wasn't done yet. Time for being eye-to-eye with manufactured splendor:
That evening about 10:15 we heard very loud noises from outside. Happily, the first thing I thought of was "fireworks!" so I wasn't scared. We went out on our porch and, sure enough, fireworks were being shot from the neighboring town. We think it may be perhaps Germany won the "football" game at the last minute and kept a place in World Cup possibilities. All this World Cup stuff is huge around here. At first I thought it had something to do with yachts but I've been educated.
It was the first time in my life that fireworks were eye-level -- we didn't have to look up to see them!
For once, I didn't go grab my camera. I didn't want to miss a moment, hugging my husband, standing on our porch ... in the Alps ... watching fireworks at eye level. Moments like this cannot be expected or planned, but, man, the joy they bring! I realize I'm smiling now just writing about it.
I'll grab a fireworks photo from the internet (below) just so I can end my blog with a bang.
Thanks for reading about our Saturday!

The towns started getting smaller and smaller below us ... and it was getting cold.

The driving trip through the Alps sounds magnificent! You do not look to be dressed very warmly for "see your breath" weather! Did the coldness take you by surprise?
ReplyDeleteYes, it did! You know how ill-equipped for the weather we are. And the sweet hot chocolate lady wasn't selling heavy sweatshirts! 😄
